4 Steps To Select The Right VELUX Window

Posted by Becky Graham on 29th April 2014

Are you overwhelmed by the range of roof windows available and the different glazing options you can choose from?

Don’t worry, choosing the right roof window for your project is easier than you think!

Simply follow these four easy steps to configure your roof window.

Step 1: Operation of Window

Centre-Pivot - The unique top control bar makes it very easy to open and close the window. The centre-pivot window is suitable for most situations and particularly recommended for within-reach applications. You have the option to position furniture directly below without obstructing the function of the window. It is safe to clean the outside pane from the inside by rotating the sash 180° and locking the window with the barrel bolt.

Top-Hung - The top-hung roof windows give a panoramic view and a feeling of being outside. The larger sizes can also be used as an emergency exit. The double opening system of the top-hung windows gives you maximum flexibility; you can use the control bar at the top or the handle at the bottom. It is safe to clean the outside pane from the inside by rotating the sash 180° and locking the window with the barrel bolt.

INTEGRA® Electric or Solar Powered - Electric and Solar powered roof windows are ideal for out-of-reach applications and for adding an extra level of comfort. They come with a fully programmable remote which uses secure radio frequency to operate individual or groups of roof windows, blinds and roller shutters from anywhere in the building. You will get all the advantages of the VELUX pivot-hung roof windows plus a built-in motor that opens and closes the window – operated automatically by a rain sensor or manually by wireless remote control.

Step 2: Interior Finish

White Polyurethane Finish - The white finish features a seamless, waterproof polyurethane coating which protects the strong wooden core from moisture and makes this finish perfect for bathrooms, kitchens or other high-humidity rooms. The stylish white finish with smooth rounded corners is also compatible with a stylish contemporary look.

Pine Finish - The pine finish features a coating with water-based colourless lacquer that protects the wood against dirt and moisture. The lacquered natural pine is ideal for a traditional interior.

Step 3: Window Size

In order to maintain a clear unobstructed view through the roof window and at the same time have sufficient headroom for operation, the height and position of the roof window have to be adjusted according to the pitch of the roof.

As a general rule: "The lower the roof pitch, the longer the roof window".  VELUX recommends that the top of the roof window be installed approximately 2 metres above the floor.

Last Step: Glazing Performance

--50 pane - Standard double glazing. A cost effective glazing option providing high solar gain. U-Value: 1.3 W/m²K

--70 pane - Additional laminated inner pane for safety. U-Value: 1.3 W/m²K

--60 pane - Additional laminated inner pane for safety with easy to clean coating for ease of cleaning, plus greater energy efficiency and enhanced noise reduction. U-Value: 1.2 W/m²K

--66 pane - A triple glazed unit that offers an excellent level of thermal insulation. Easy to clean and anti-dew coating. U-Value: 1.0 W/m²K

--62 pane - A triple glazed unit that offers an excellent level of sound reduction and thermal insulation. Anti-dew coating. U-Value: 0.89 W/m²K

--70Q pane - The double glazed unit provides enhanced safety and security. Windows with this glazing also feature additional locks. U-Value: 1.3 W/m²K

Please note that not all glazing options are available with all window styles and/or sizes and are subject to different delivery times. U-values measure how effective a material is as an insulator. The lower the U-value, the better the material is as a heat insulator.

Congratulations! You are now one step closer to your VELUX Roof Window.

Don’t forget to select a suitable flashing for the right roof covering to match the size and number of windows. A flashing is vital to ensure the correct installation and insulation for energy efficiency.
